Jonathan Oates
Chief Executive of United Against Malnutrition and Hunger

Bio

Jonny has been a member of House of Lords since October 2015 and is Chief Executive of United Against Malnutrition and Hunger, an advocacy group which seeks to raise the profile of global malnutrition and hunger and drive UK action to tackle it. 

During the UK’S Coalition Government, he was Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister, and Deputy Director of Communications in 10 Downing Street. He is a former Director of Policy and Communications at the Liberal Democrats and was Director of General Election Communications for the 2010 General Election. He served as a Councillor on Kingston Council, including as Deputy Leader of the council between 1994 and 1998. From 1999-2001 he lived in South Africa working for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. 

He has also worked in Zimbabwe, teaching in a rural secondary school. Jonny is a member of the Advisory Board of The Britain Project, a non-partisan, political movement seeking to build a broad liberal and progressive coalition in the UK and a Trustee of The World Reimagined, (an arts and education project to develop a shared understanding of the impacts of the transatlantic slave trade) His memoir, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, was published in October 2020.
